Tactical helmets are an integral part of the equipment for both servicemen and members of law enforcement and special services. Helmets are designed to protect the head from fragments, bullets and other dangers that may be encountered in extreme conditions. They are made of strong materials, such as carbon fiber (Kevlar) or ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, which provide an optimal balance of protective properties and product weight.

What is the protection level of a ballistic helmet?
First of all, remember the purpose of ballistic helmets — they are designed not to protect against bullets! Yes, to obtain a certain protection class under DSTU, all armored products are shot with certain types of weapons. However, the main goal of a military helmet is anti-fragmentation protection, since over 90% of wounds in a combat zone are precisely fragmentation wounds.
We manufacture helmets in accordance with DSTU Level 1. This is the most optimal combination of weight and protective properties, corresponding to the level of threats in wartime conditions. However, they are also used by members of special units of law-enforcement agencies, police officers, cash-in-transit guards, and so on.
At the same time, DSTU Level 2 ballistic helmets also exist, but in real combat conditions they are rarely used. Why?
First, the weight. Such a helmet together with its mount will be significantly heavier than a Level 1 helmet. And in the working conditions of the military this has a direct impact on maneuverability, endurance, and in the long term — on the health of the cervical vertebrae.
Second, the price. The cost of a Level 2 helmet is almost twice as high. In the event of a hit, the helmet may lose its ballistic properties and therefore require replacement. That's why the product's affordability also matters.
Anti-fragmentation resistance testing
Armored products are also tested for anti-fragmentation resistance, which is especially relevant for helmets. Under the standard STANAG 2920 the ability of products to withstand fragments is assessed. At first this standard was applied only to body armor, but now all types of protection can receive such an assessment. For testing under STANAG 2920, the product is shot with FSPs (fragment-simulating projectiles) at various speeds.
STANAG 2920 does not have a division into protection levels, but only determines the minimum fragment speed at which the product can provide effective protection — V50. This is the speed at which 50% of fragments penetrate the material and the other 50% do not.
